Mary Postgate by Rudyard Kipling

Mary Postgate is a name of the short story that Rudyard Kipling wrote before his son died in World War One. Mary Postgate story is so complex. Mary's character is more complex than I thought of.

The beginning of the story, Mary was the nurse. She serves for the Village Nursing Committee. She took care of Miss. Fowler, middle of 55's, crippled from a disease called rheumatoid arthritis. Mary and Miss. Fowler knew each other after Miss. Fowler's nephew was thrown out from the orphanage, he is eleven years old. Mary stood her up herself and willing to help them. She has her business with education, practiced with public and private school. She does the responsible of checking the printed cloth-lists, wrote down extra of bills, wrote to doctors, nurses, masters, and matrons. Miss. Fowler repaid her for what she have done.  Mary's personality is variable. She can be very hold back, barely to show her feelings. She can be humorous, serious, laid-back, hard-working if needed, helpful, and caring. Miss. Fowler was bragged about her. She told everyone that Mary is a wonderful woman and she can lead a good future, life, and a big difference in her time period. Mary has deal alot with herself after her parents' death. She suffered alot after many deaths ahead her. Miss. Fowler decided to give her some poison drink so she can rest in peace without any pain. In the end, she laid so handsome as Miss. Fowler said. Actually, it confuses me in someway about death situations. I don't actually understand the story but I am trying my best =)

Smokers by Tobias Wolff

I have been reading "Smokers." At first, it was confused because of secret characters and whose the one that speaking. In the class, a teacher explained to us all about the story and I understood completely after I read the Smokers over again.

It is all about three characters who had a fight triangle, more likely envy. Let me describe those three characters in the Smokers. First, a Narrator who has envy problems. We decided to call him Tobias because the author of the story named Tobias Wolff. Tobias is a bright guy and he likes to hunt animals with his dad, also he is a good writer.  Secondly, Eugene is from Indiana, a skilled swimmer, he is the only one student whose smokes. Third, Talbot is a well-known because his father races car, he and his family donated hockey rink, and very laid-back. Three of them are bright students and all of them receive scholarships from private school named Choate Prep School.

They fought against each other often, to show who is the better. The envy situation becomes worse after Talbot thumbs down when Tobias asked him to be his roommate. Talbot and Eugene decided to be roommates and it led Tobias to be jealous. The point why Tobias has to be jealous, I don't really know. In the moment, Tobias invited Talbot to play tennis but somehow Talbot never show up. It makes Tobias to be upset more. The envy between them develops more because Talbot hangs out with Eugene often and their bond became stronger, Tobias felt rejected. Later on, the emotions in the story became worse. Tobias gave up and made a plan. He planned and reported the dorm supervisor that Eugene smokes in the room and in the building which is illegal. The dorm supervisor found out that Eugene smoked in his closet and decided to kick him out from the school. So therefore, Talbot and Eugene are not the roommates anymore. After Eugene was kicked out from the school. Tobias has his chance to be roommate with Talbot. Perhaps. Actually, Talbot doesn't care if Eugene was kicked out. In the end, are they roommates and did Tobias's plan successful? I don't know, maybe?

Roman Fever

Roman Fever wrote by Edith Wharton. It was published in 1934. I don't want to make it complicates. I will say I read the story more than once, hardly to understand at first. Most of all, it is all about ENVY in the story. Envy is the most dangerous thing in a living. It can lead to a revenge, lead to something bad, or ruin your important people or things.

Let me express my opinion of the story. The main characters of the Roman Fever will be Grace Ansley and Alida Slade. The description of Alida Slade showed that she thinks she is all that since she is who was fuller, and higher in color, with a small nose supported by vigorous black eyebrows, gave them a good-humored laugh, also she has a jealousy issues with Grace Ansley. The description of Grace Ansley showed that she is the one who is a hard-working and under alot of stress. Let me explain about those both women. They grew up in Manhattan, New York, and were friends from childhood. The romantic rivalry in their youth ages make Mrs. Slade increases her jealousy and hate against Mrs. Ansley. Both of them had daughter and their names are Barbara Ansley and Jenny Slade. Mrs. Ansley and Mrs. Slade tend to compare their own daughters, whose is the best.

Later on, Mrs. Ansley and Mrs. Slade took their daughters to Rome for a visit. Somehow Mrs. Slade has a husband named Delphin and they were married up to 25 years. I am not sure about that part but let me guess. Mrs. Slade revealed her secret to Mrs. Ansley that she wrote the letter to Delphin that Mrs. Ansley has Roman Fever, some kind of an illness, so Delphin will not meet her up in the Colosseum. Mrs. Slade did it on purpose so they both won't meet. It was an evidence that Mrs. Slade has envy problem. End of the story is full of surprise after Mrs. Slade revealed her secret because Mrs. Ansley told her that she has Barbara with Delphin. So concept Mrs. Ansley and Delphin has an affair in somehow. It was a tricky but it is all good.

My created character

In June, there was a poor young girl who was alone in a hot day in the farm. She has a thick dark brunette hair and she braids it messy, she never leave it straight or ponytails it. She has a sunburn top on her head. She has mysterious sky blue eyes that light up the day. Her lips are chapped and dry, she wets them every time they gets dry. Her smell is so sweet and tender. Her smile is enough to make a dull day seem bright as a shining moon. She has millions of freckles and sunburn on her cheek which makes her face looks younger. Her hands are hard-working and her nails are so dirty. She has many scratches all over on her body. She wore a t-shirt with a dirt on it and an old rotten blue jean, she have no socks or shoes. She walked around with bare feet. Her toenails are not trimmed and chapped. She tends to put her right hand on the pocket and look down when she is wandering around. She is so lonely; she has a teardrop out from her eyes. She is so lost but she is hopeful. She is tired but she is still working. She thinks she is gone but she is still here. She is like a bird without a wing. The more she survives, the more she becomes stronger.

A rose for Emily

I have been heard of that story but I have no chances to read or take a peek inside. Finally, I read it and it was one of the bizarre short story ever. The author of that book is William Faulkner. At first, I read it and I don't really understand at first place so I read it over again and I got it. Emily Grierson is a woman who lived in Jefferson and his father is decreased. Back to the point, when Emily's father is still alive, he forbids Emily to date because he believed that no man suitable for her. Emily was so dependent on her father, Mr. Grierson. After he dies, Emily won't allow anybody to remove his body because she thinks he is still alive. So she left his father in the house for two years and the bad scents started to spread around the house. Later on, Emily met a man named Homer Barron. They started to liked each other after Homer is one of the crew to work on sidewalks of Griersons' house. Somehow, Homer decides to leave her and Emily become upset. Emily decided to buy an arsenic, an illegal drug from a man. She supposed to ask a law to buy an arsenic but she convinced man to gave her without asking the law. She used an arsenic to write under the skull saying "FOR RATS" on Homer's head. She murdered him because he wants to leave her. The town of Jefferson become concerned with Homer Barron's disappearance. Emily tried to commit suicide herself because of Homer. Emily become older, gained weights, and barely come out from her house. She passed away. After Emily's funeral. Few authorities and Emily's negro servant entered her house and found Homer Barron's corpse body in the bridal room. Nobody finds out for almost 40 years. Everyone suspects that Emily mays have a sexual relationship with a corpse body of Homer Barron's. My opinion of this story is, this story is one of a kind and so bizarre. The story is fascinated. I am glad that I have a chance to read it about time.
